Anmerkung:

Im klassischen Arabisch verstand man unter سَنَة‎ (DMG: sana)  den „Zeitraum eines Jahres, egal von welchem Tage an gezählt wird.“[7] Lane zufolge bezeichnete der andalusische Gelehrte as-Suhaylī in seinem Werk الروض الانف في شرح السيرة النبوية لابن هشام‎ (DMG: ar-Rawḍ al-unufi fī šarḥ as-sīra an-Nabawiyya li-Ibn Hišām)  diesen Zeitraum als „a single revolution of the sun“.[8] Somit sei er „longer than the عَام‎“.[8] عَام‎ (DMGʿām) →ar bezeichnete „das Jahr im Sinne von den Jahreszeiten, also Sommer und Winter zusammen“,[7] konnte aber auch die „[twelve] Arabian months [collectively]“[8] benennen. سَنَة‎ (DMG: sana)  wurde allerdings ebenfalls verwendet, um den Zeitraum von „twelve revolutions of the moon“[8] anzugeben. Des Weiteren beschrieb, Lane zufolge, der Religionsgelehrte ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī سَنَة‎ (DMG: sana)  als „a year in which is difficulty, and drought, or barrenness, or dearth“,[8] im Gegensatz zu عَام‎ (DMGʿām) →ar, „in which is ampleness of the means, or circumstances, of life, and abundance of herbage or the like“.[8] Ausgangspunkt für diese Deutung dürfte wohl eine Stelle im Koran sein, wo es in Sure 29, Vers 14 über den Aufenthalt des Propheten Noah bei seinem Volk heißt:[8] « ۝ […] ۝ »‎ (DMG: […] alfa sanatin illā ḫamsīna ʿāmạn […])  ‚[…] tausend Jahre weniger fünfzig [Jahre] […]‘[9] Gemeint ist, dass die fünfzig Jahre „passed before the mission of the prophet [Noah], before which no harm happened to him from his people ; but after this mission, the years were difficult to him“.[8] Im übertragenen Sinne konnte das Wort deshalb auch „[d]rought, or barrenness, or vehement or intense drought“ sowie „land […] [a]ffected with drought or barrenness“[8] bedeuten.
